Voted Best Lawn Care Business -- Best of Guthrie County
Lawn Care Services
Stuart and surrounding Guthrie County properties sit on heavy clay soil that compacts, drains poorly after wet springs, and bakes in dry Julys. Our lawn care services address all of it -- mowing, weed control, fertilization, aeration, and seeding on a schedule that matches Iowa's growing season. Residential and commercial properties welcome.
Residential and commercial mowing with zero-turn equipment. Weekly, bi-weekly, or as-needed scheduling through the Iowa growing season.
Learn More ›Liquid broadleaf treatment targeting dandelions, creeping Charlie, thistle, and other common Guthrie County lawn weeds. Timed to the plants, not just the calendar.
Learn More ›Slow-release granular fertilizer timed to Iowa's climate. Spring, mid-summer, and fall applications to support the turf through every phase of the growing season.
See 8-Step Program ›Break up the compaction that clay soils create. Best done in late summer or early fall in Iowa so the turf can fill in before winter.
Learn More ›Remove the layer of dead organic material blocking water and fertilizer from reaching the soil. Done in early spring before the growing season starts.
See 8-Step Program ›The comprehensive year-round option. Eight timed treatments from spring dethatching in March to fall fertilizer in November/December.
See Full Program ›SLS Tree Management
Tree services are handled through SLS Tree Management, Schwinger's dedicated tree division added in 2013. Same crew, same standards, with the specialized equipment and full insurance that tree work requires. Stuart's older neighborhoods have mature ash, oak, and elm that need proper care -- and Iowa's ice storms and derecho events mean storm cleanup is a regular part of the work.
Dead limb removal, crown cleaning, structural pruning. Proper cuts that the tree can heal from -- not hacking.
Learn More ›Full removal of dead, dying, or structurally compromised trees. Methodical sectioning to protect surrounding structures. All sizes.
Learn More ›Grind stumps to below grade so you can re-seed or mow the area. Best done at the same time as removal.
Learn More ›Iowa ice storms and derecho winds -- including the August 2020 derecho -- create real damage. We handle debris removal from single branches to whole-property cleanup.
Learn More ›Systemic insecticide treatments to protect ash trees before EAB infestation takes hold. Also assessment of already-affected trees.
Learn More ›Proactive care to extend the life of your trees. Fully insured. Free estimates. Call to discuss what your trees need.
Learn More ›Winter Services
Iowa averages 30-35 inches of snow per year. Stuart's proximity to I-80 keeps the main artery moving, but residential driveways and commercial parking lots are a different matter after an overnight storm. We run plow trucks, snow blowers, and hand shoveling for every situation. De-icing salt and sand available. Seasonal contracts and per-event service.
Residential driveways and rural acreage approaches. Plow trucks handle the volume; snow blowers and shoveling finish the details.
Learn More ›Parking lots, loading areas, and access drives. Seasonal contracts mean we monitor the forecast and show up without waiting for a call.
Learn More ›Salt application and sand/salt mix for ice control after plowing. Prevents rebonding when temps drop overnight after a partial melt.
Learn More ›Seeding and Hydroseeding
For new lawns, construction site restoration, or bare areas that need to be re-established from scratch. Traditional overseeding works for thin areas. Hydroseeding -- a sprayed slurry of seed, mulch, and fertilizer -- is faster, more even, and more cost-effective than sod on larger areas or anything with slope or erosion concerns.
Seed, wood fiber mulch, and fertilizer sprayed as a slurry. Germination in 5-7 days under good Iowa spring conditions. Green dye confirms full coverage.
Learn More ›Broadcast seeding over existing thin lawns. Best paired with core aeration so seed falls into plugs and makes good soil contact.
Learn More ›Full seeding or hydroseeding for new construction sites and bare areas. We handle site prep and seed selection for your conditions.
Learn More ›Site Work
Proper grading is what makes the difference between a yard that drains correctly and one that collects water against the foundation or in low spots after every rain. We do finish grading for new construction and regrading for existing properties that have developed drainage problems. Iowa's clay soils can shift and settle in ways that create low spots over time -- catching it with grading fixes the problem before it becomes a foundation or basement issue.
Final grade prep for new construction sites before seeding or hydroseeding. Establishes proper slope and drainage away from structures.
Correct low spots, drainage problems, and settled areas on existing properties. Often paired with seeding after the grade work is done.
Grading and hydroseeding combined to stabilize slopes and prevent erosion on new or disturbed sites.
Weed Control
Broadleaf weed control is a core part of what we do. Dandelions, creeping Charlie, plantain, thistle -- these are the common pressure weeds in Guthrie County lawns and they don't go away on their own. Liquid broadleaf applications timed to the plant's growth cycle get significantly better results than just spraying on a fixed date. Pre-emergent crabgrass control in early spring keeps annual grasses from germinating in the first place.
Spring and fall liquid applications targeting dandelions, creeping Charlie, plantain, clover, thistle. Two applications per year for best control.
Granular pre-emergent applied in early spring before soil temperatures hit 55 degrees. Stops crabgrass before it germinates.
The most complete weed control option -- two broadleaf treatments, pre-emergent, fertilization, and aeration in one year-round program.
