Consistent, proper mowing is the foundation of a healthy lawn. Cut too short and you stress the grass and invite weeds. Miss a week in peak growing season and you're dealing with clumping and lawn damage. We run zero-turn equipment and know the right height for the grass types common in this part of Iowa.
We service both residential lawns and commercial properties. Some customers are on a regular weekly schedule during the growing season (roughly May through October here). Others call as needed. Either way, when we mow, the lawn is going to look right when we leave.
Weed Control and Fertilization
Guthrie County lawns deal with dandelions, creeping Charlie, broadleaf plantain, clover, and thistle -- pretty typical for central Iowa. The thing about weed control is that timing matters more than just spraying. The right product at the right point in the weed's growth cycle is what makes it work. Spraying dandelions in seed is different from hitting them at rosette stage.
We do liquid broadleaf control timed to the plants, not just the calendar. We also offer granular pre-emergent for crabgrass in spring -- that application needs to go down before soil temps hit 55 degrees for consistent days, which in Stuart typically means April or earlier in a warm year.

Iowa's clay-heavy soils compact over time -- foot traffic, mowing, freeze-thaw cycles. Compacted soil is the single biggest reason lawns in this region look thin and stressed. Water and fertilizer can't penetrate to the roots. Core aeration punches plugs out of the soil to break that up, and it makes a real difference. We typically recommend it in late summer or early fall here -- August through September -- so the grass has time to fill in before winter.
Dethatching removes the layer of dead organic material that builds up between the soil and the grass canopy. A thin thatch layer is normal, but more than half an inch starts blocking water and nutrients. We dethatch in early spring before the growing season gets going.
Overseeding thin or bare areas works best right after aeration, when seed can fall into the aeration plugs and make good soil contact. We also do full seeding of new lawns, new construction areas, and heavily damaged turf. For larger areas or slopes where erosion is a concern, hydroseeding is usually the better option.

How often should I mow my lawn?
During peak growing season in Iowa -- roughly May through mid-June and again in September -- weekly mowing is usually right. In the heat of late June through August, growth slows, and some lawns can go 10-14 days. The rule of thumb is never remove more than one-third of the blade height in a single mow. If you let it go too long and then cut it short, you shock the grass and open the door for weeds and disease. We'll set a schedule that makes sense for your lawn and the season.
When is the best time to aerate in Iowa?
Late summer into early fall -- August through September -- is the best window for core aeration on cool-season grass lawns, which is what most Iowa properties have. Soil is warm, the grass is still growing, and the cooler temps and fall rains help the turf recover and fill in before winter shuts things down. Spring aeration works too but fall is generally better here. We typically pair aeration with overseeding when a lawn needs it.
What weeds are most common in Guthrie County lawns?
Dandelions are the obvious one -- they're everywhere in Iowa and very aggressive in the heavy clay soils around Stuart. Creeping Charlie (ground ivy) is a big problem in shadier areas. Broadleaf plantain, clover, and common thistle show up regularly. Crabgrass is an annual that comes back every year from seed in lawns that have thin turf or bare spots. A solid pre-emergent application in spring, combined with good turf density through fertilization and overseeding, is the best long-term control strategy.
